Real Mom Review: George Washington Wyndham Grand Hotel in Winchester, Virginia
By Leslie Silverman, CertifiKID Team MemberPosted Jul 10, 2019
Less than an hour's drive from Washington, D.C. and Baltimore in Winchester, Virginia lies the old charm of The George Washington Wyndham Grand Hotel. The historic hotel dates back to 1924 and features marble flooring, soaring ceilings, a Roman-style indoor pool, and the original front desk from the 1920s. On site, they have George's Food & Spirits restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, the Half Note Lounge for live entertainment on weekends, and Saumaj Health Spa.
One of our CertifiKID team members and her family recently visited The George Washington Wyndham Grand Hotel. She shares an honest review of her experience below.
We were looking for a one-night getaway. Somewhere the kids would be entertained as much as my husband and I. But not too far away... I'm not a huge fan of long car rides. Where did we choose? The George Washington Grand Hotel in Winchester, Virginia.
Built in 1924, The George Washington Hotel was named after our first president. In 1748, George Washington first visited Winchester, then known as Fredericktown, as a surveyor for Lord Fairfax. Washington purchased property in Winchester in 1753 and the town served as his headquarters from 1755 to 1758 while he commanded Virginia troops on the western frontier during the French and Indian War.
The George Washington Grand Hotel is nothing short of magnificent. A bright, stately lobby greeted us upon arrival.
Our hotel room was equally stunning. By the time I realized I should have taken a photo, our overnight bags were strewn across the floor, and the kids were sprawled across the perfectly made beds, exploring the room service menu and asking how soon we could check out the pool. So much for the photo, so here's one that I grabbed from their website.
Winchester's main street - Loudoun Street Pedestrian Mall - is just one short block from the hotel. The street is lined with restaurants, cafes, and shops. There's a paint-your-own-pottery shop, toy stores, clothing stores, a shoe store, and many different specialty stores offering interesting and unique gifts of all kinds.
Many of the restaurants offer outdoor seating, which we opted for so we could enjoy the fresh air and people watch.
Did I mention that Winchester was celebrating the 4th of July the night we visited? As we finished dinner and the time for fireworks neared, the kids announced that they'd rather swim in the hotel pool than watch fireworks. So, back to the hotel we walked, changed into swimsuits, and celebrated the 4th of July in the beautiful pool, modeled after a Roman bathhouse!
Swimming creates hunger, so before bed, we shared a bite to eat from the onsite restaurant, George's Food & Spirits.
After a restful night's sleep, we headed back to George's Food & Spirits, but this time for breakfast. It was a perfect outdoor setting on a beautiful morning. Over coffee, hot chocolate, waffles and french toast we discussed our itinerary for the day.
Would we take a self-guided walking tour of Old Town Winchester? Or, would we rather take a historical tour of Winchester as George Washington knew it in 1756? There are so many options. What did the kids vote for? Going back to the pool, of course! We compromised. A short walking tour (including the Loudoun Street splash pad), followed by a pre-departure cool-off in the beautiful pool. What a great getaway!
